Positive Coaching + Parenting [2018-2019 SEASON KICKOFF]

What started as a dairy sponsored league for 600 Maui players in the 1970’s (MYSO), now provides U.S. club soccer competition and programs for nearly 4,000 youth players on all four major Hawaiian Islands (HSF).  Our primary mission is to improve the daily player experience; and one of the ways in which we accomplish our mission is by holding our member clubs, coaches, and parents to higher standards.

We are partners in youth development.  Positive coaching and parenting are paramount in developing a healthy approach towards competition; balancing work and play; and cultivating the love of the game.  Developing children as People First, and Players First, creates a culture that values life lessons and individual player development over the win at-all-cost culture that prioritizes winning and creating winning teams.

For these reasons, the Hawaii Soccer Federation, Kauai Soccer Association, and Hawaii Futsal partnered in 2017 to provide Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) Workshops for all of its coaches and parents of players on Maui, Kauaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island.

Haleakala Dairy owner, Peter D. Baldwin, founded MYSO in 1975, and used the family business to sponsor the purchase of 600 uniforms.  During that time, "Milk Covers" became a popular game amongst Maui children; and the fad reemerged throughout Hawai'i in the 2000's—called "POG's".

On Saturday, August 25, HSF will kickoff the 2018-2019 soccer calendar by providing Second-Goal Parenting and Double-Goal Coaching Workshops for Maui coaches and parents—free of charge.  The inter-island, inter-organizational agreement requires HSF and Hawaii Futsal coaches to become PCA certified annually—in addition to undergoing US Club Soccer’s background screening; player safety training (e.g., concussion management); and training which cover hazing, bullying, emotional and physical misconduct, harassment (sexual and non-sexual)—including reporting obligations.  No other youth soccer organization in Hawaiʻi does more to provide a safe and positive environment for its players.

Developing children as people first, and players first, creates a culture that values life lessons and individual player development over the win at-all-cost culture that prioritizes winning and creating winning teams.
